PRODUCT CARE GUIDE
Our products are handmade from carefully selected natural materials. Because we use real leather, solid unlacquered brass, and natural rope, each material has its own character — and its own care needs. Below you will find everything you need to know to keep your product in its best condition for years to come.
Butter Leather Collection
Leather
Our leather is pure German leather and is not treated with synthetic coatings or harsh chemicals. This is a deliberate choice — it keeps the leather pure, breathable, and genuinely natural. Because of this, the leather is a living material: it softens with wear, stretches to fit your dog, and develops its own unique patina over time. Marks, slight texture changes, and gentle colour shifts are completely normal and are a sign of authentic, quality leather — not damage. Since we work with fresh, untreated leather, we cannot fully prevent the natural ageing process — but we would not want to. This is what makes each piece unique to its owner.
Cleaning: Leather should be dry cleaned only. Wipe gently with a dry cloth or a very slightly damp cloth if needed. For dried mud or dirt, allow it to dry completely first, then brush off gently with a soft brush. Never scrub, soak, or machine wash leather parts.
Maintenance: Condition your leather occasionally with a quality leather balm or grease to keep it supple and extend its life. Work the conditioner in gently with a soft cloth or brush. Store your product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
Please avoid: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high heat, as this causes the leather to dry out and crack over time. Do not use chemical sprays, household cleaners, or alcohol-based products on the leather.
Hardware
Steel: Our steel hardware is solid and built for everyday use. Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly after exposure to rain or water. No harsh chemicals are needed or recommended.
Brass — Unlacquered (Living Finish): Our solid brass hardware carries no protective lacquer coating, making it a living finish. Over time, contact with air, humidity, and skin oils will naturally cause the brass to oxidise — it may darken slightly or develop a warm, aged patina. This is completely normal and many of our customers love the character it adds over time.
To restore the original shine, polish gently with a dedicated brass cleaner or apply a small drop of white vinegar to a soft cloth and rub gently. Important: keep brass cleaner and vinegar away from the surrounding leather, as both can stain or dry out untreated leather on contact.
Touch of Leather Collection
Rope
The rope section is the most washable part of the product and can be cleaned with warm water and a small amount of mild soap.
Hand wash (recommended): Wash gently by hand with warm water and a small amount of mild soap. To keep the rope soft and supple, rub a small amount of baby oil into the rope and then rinse thoroughly. Always air dry — do not put in a dryer.
Important: When washing the rope, keep the leather section as dry as possible. If the leather does get wet, blot gently with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat.
Leather
The leather on Touch of Leather products is the same pure, naturally untreated German leather as in our Butter Leather collection. It requires dry cleaning only and should never be soaked or machine washed. Wipe gently with a dry cloth only, keep it away from water when cleaning the rope section, and condition occasionally with a leather balm to keep it supple. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and heat.
Hardware
The hardware on Touch of Leather products is cared for in the same way as the Butter Leather collection.
Steel: Wipe clean and dry thoroughly after water exposure. No harsh chemicals needed.
Brass — Unlacquered (Living Finish): Natural darkening over time is completely normal. To restore shine, apply a small drop of white vinegar or brass cleaner on a soft cloth and rub gently. Keep product away from the surrounding leather when cleaning.
